Tragic Death of Kalingalinga Mobile Money Vendor in Criminal Incident
In a tragic incident, a 22-year-old man named Wilson Mulenga Chanda lost his life after being pushed out of a moving vehicle by suspected criminals who attempted to steal his phone. The incident occurred on September 26, 2023, at around 20:00 hours at Shoprite Kalingalinga, where the victim worked as a Mobile Money vendor.
According to a statement by Rae Hamoonga, Police Spokesperson, the victim had lent his cellphone to two individuals who posed as needing to make a call. It was only later that he realized they were criminals known for stealing mobile phones. In an attempt to prevent them from escaping, the victim held onto the car door as the suspects drove away in a Toyota Corolla with registration number BAF 5725.
A nearby police officer witnessed the unfolding situation and fired warning gunshots to rescue the victim. However, the vehicle continued to move, pushing Chanda out of the moving car. He struck his head on the road, sustaining a severe head injury, and tragically, he died on the spot near Kalingalinga police post.
Following the incident, the suspects fled the scene after their vehicle was shot at, and its tires were deflated. It was later discovered that the suspects had altered the vehicle’s number plate using seal tape, changing “F” to “P” and “2” to “8.”
The authorities have impounded the motor vehicle and placed it at Woodlands police station, while the victim’s body has been deposited at the University Teaching Hospital Mortuary. Police have initiated a manhunt to locate and apprehend the criminals responsible for this unfortunate incident.
