Emirates Joins Forces with AIA to Advance Emissions Reduction
Emirates, a global leader in aviation, has embarked on a pioneering partnership with the Aviation Impact Accelerator (AIA) at the University of Cambridge, pledging an initial investment from its USD $200 million Sustainability Fund.
The partnership aims to foster collaboration between Emirates and the AIA, leveraging the latter’s expertise in climate impact tools and data modeling to devise innovative solutions for reducing global aviation emissions.
By accessing the AIA’s proprietary interactive data visualization tools, Emirates seeks to enhance its understanding of emissions reduction pathways and actively engage in future projects dedicated to sustainable aviation.
Led by the University of Cambridge’s Whittle Laboratory and Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL), the AIA is an international initiative focused on developing evidence-based systems, modeling capabilities, and specialized tools to accelerate pathways towards sustainable aviation.
Emirates joins a prestigious list of industrial partners, including Boeing, Rolls-Royce, and The Royal Air Force, in supporting the AIA’s mission.
Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline, expressed pride in the airline’s role as an industrial partner of the AIA, emphasizing the significance of constructive collaboration in addressing the long-term climate impact of commercial aviation.
He highlighted Emirates’ commitment to sharing knowledge and insights to support the development of tools that address critical gaps in aviation technology and infrastructure.
Professor Rob Miller FREng, Director of the Whittle Laboratory and AIA lead, welcomed Emirates’ partnership, emphasizing the airline’s leadership in driving the sector’s transition towards net-zero aviation.
He underscored the pivotal role of the Sustainability Fund in unlocking actionable solutions within the aviation industry.
Emirates will explore collaboration opportunities on various tools developed by the AIA, including RECCE (Resource to Climate Comparison Evaluator), JIST (Journey Impact Simulator Tool), and CRAFT (Climate Response to Aviation Future Scenarios Tool).
These tools facilitate the analysis of future scenarios and enable stakeholders to chart pathways towards net-zero aviation.
The Emirates Sustainability Fund aims to support R&D projects focused on reducing the impact of fossil fuels in commercial aviation, with funds disbursed over three years to globally recognized organizations, start-ups, and academic institutions.
By actively engaging in workshops and policy discussions, Emirates aims to contribute to the development of sustainable aviation solutions in collaboration with industry and academic partners.
