Zambia in Urgent Need of K22.2 Billion for Drought Relief
The Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) is urging for national unity and collaboration in response to the severe drought impacting the country.
Commending President Hichilema’s proactive approach, the EFZ executive director Bishop Andrew Mwenda echoes the call for K22.2 billion (USD 1.2 billion) to address the immediate need for food aid and recovery.
The drought has impacted a significant portion of Zambia, affecting 84 out of 116 districts across various provinces. While acknowledging the government’s lead role through relevant ministries and departments, the EFZ emphasizes the need for a collective effort.
Bishop Mwenda calls upon churches, businesses, local and international NGOs, and volunteers to contribute resources – both financial and manpower – to tackle the widespread hunger crisis affecting millions.
Recognizing the recent economic challenges faced by Zambia, including COVID-19, Anthrax, and cholera, the EFZ views this crisis as an opportunity for national unity.
Bishop Mwenda encourage the Church and its global partners to step up efforts in supporting those severely affected.
He urges politicians to avoid politicizing the crisis and instead offer solutions in a spirit of national unity. President Hichilema has highlighted the gravity of the situation, with an estimated 9.8 million Zambians severely affected, and 6.6 million in dire need of immediate humanitarian aid.
Furthermore, he notes that EFZ stands ready to assist by mobilizing volunteers from its member churches across Zambia to contribute to the relief efforts.
