UN Special Representative Collaborates with Zambia to End Violence Against Children
Dr. Najat Maalla, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Violence Against Children, has embarked on a collaborative effort in Zambia aimed at ending violence against children.
The visit, which includes engagements with key stakeholders and communities, seeks to strengthen partnerships and enhance the implementation of legislation and policies to safeguard children’s rights in Zambia and Southern Africa.
During her courtesy call on Ms. Doreen Mwamba, the Minister of Community Development and Social Services, Dr. Maalla emphasized the importance of streamlining children-centered policies to effectively address their issues.
She commended Zambia for enacting the Children’s Code Act and implementing frameworks such as the Child Participation framework and Safeguarding Policy, vital for protecting and promoting children’s rights.
Dr. Maalla’s visit also includes engagements with children, families, and frontline social service workers addressing violence against children. Through these interactions, she aims to gain firsthand insights into the challenges faced and identify opportunities for improvement.
Expressing appreciation for the UN delegation’s prioritization of Zambia, Ms. Mwamba affirmed Zambia’s commitment to creating favorable conditions in law and policy to end violence against children.
She highlighted the establishment of institutional policies and legislative frameworks aimed at protecting children and ensuring their well-being.
