Edgar Lungu Announces Return to Active Politics in Defense of Democracy
Zambia’s former President, Dr. Edgar C. Lungu, delivered a powerful speech today at the 9th memorial anniversary of the late Mr. Michael Chilufya Sata, Zambia’s fifth President, held at the Cathedral of Child Jesus in Lusaka.
In his speech, Dr. Lungu paid tribute to the late President Sata, remembering him as a determined freedom fighter, a pragmatic leader, a democrat, and a mentor to many.
He highlighted President Sata’s unique ability to forgive and work with former adversaries, emphasizing the need to embrace such lessons to defend and protect Zambia’s democracy.
Lungu also praised President Sata’s legacy, especially in infrastructure development, and indicated that he had followed in President Sata’s vision when he succeeded him as president.
However, the former president expressed concerns about recent events within the Patriotic Front (PF) party, indicating that certain members and leaders had attempted to undermine the party’s leadership. He accused some government officials of attempting to subvert democracy for their own political interests.
In response to these concerns, Dr. Lungu made a significant announcement. He declared his return to active politics and his intention to continue as the President of the PF, a position he was elected to in 2021 with a mandate up to 2026.
Dr. Lungu invited all opposition parties to join forces with the PF in the fight to protect democracy and the rule of law.
