Tobacco Trading Begins in Zambia, but Only 4 Out of 16 Buyers Ready to Pay

Tobacco sales have officially commenced in Nkeyema and Chipata, with the first bales trading just a day after the Tobacco Board of Zambia opened the 2026 marketing season on 13 April.

According to Corporate Affairs and Communication Manager Lee Haamunji, measures have been put in place to promote transparency, including the display of approved price matrices at sales floors to allow growers and stakeholders direct access to official buying prices.

Despite the start of trading, the Board has raised concern over low compliance levels among licensed buyers. Out of 16 registered buyers, only four have submitted their price matrices, representing a 25 per cent submission rate.

Mr Haamunji noted that of the four submissions received, only one has been approved as it meets the cost-of-production benchmark designed to protect farmers.

He emphasised that regulations require each buyer to submit an independent price matrix for approval before participating in the market.

The Tobacco Board of Zambia has since urged all remaining buyers to expedite the submission of their pricing frameworks to ensure smooth operations and fair pricing across the sector.

Mr Haamunji further appealed to farmers to remain patient, assuring them that the Board remains committed to safeguarding their interests and ensuring they receive the best possible prices for their tobacco during the marketing season.
