Botswana Hospital Combines Skill and Compassion to Save Lives

Francistown Academic Hospital (FAH) is transforming healthcare delivery in Botswana, combining medical excellence with compassion to restore lives and strengthen communities.

For Harry Gulubane, an English teacher from Francistown, the hospital became a lifeline following a devastating road accident in December 2023 that claimed the life of his daughter and left him with severe injuries.

“I broke an elbow, dislocated my left arm and had a spinal injury,” he recalled.

After weeks of immobility and uncertainty, Gulubane underwent specialised treatment at FAH, including surgery and physiotherapy, which gradually restored his mobility and independence. Today, he has returned to doing what he loves, repairing cars.

FAH, located on the eastern edge of Francistown, has emerged as a centre of medical excellence, offering 18 specialities and extending services to over 30 villages and towns through community outreach programmes.

Founder Dr Sant Parkash Singh said the hospital is committed to ensuring accessible, high-quality healthcare. “Communities know they can come to FAH for a wide range of treatments because of our multiple specialities,” he noted.

The hospital’s impact extends beyond individual patients. With support from the Botswana Development Corporation and funding from the African Development Bank, FAH has undergone significant expansion, contributing to improved healthcare services and job creation.

Approximately 185 jobs had been created by July 2025, benefiting both medical professionals and local communities.

Another patient, 52-year-old Mathodi Modisapudi, experienced the hospital’s compassionate approach firsthand. After suffering prolonged illness caused by a large fibroid, she faced financial challenges in accessing surgery.

Despite the high cost, FAH provided a flexible payment plan and a discount, enabling her to receive the life-saving procedure. “I have recovered, I am happy, and I can work now,” she said.

Stories such as those of Gulubane and Modisapudi highlight the critical role of accessible and well-equipped health systems in improving lives. They also demonstrate the broader impact of sustained investment in healthcare infrastructure across Africa.
