Absa Raises Cup Sponsorship to K7 Million, Adds Travel Grants
Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts Elvis C. Nkandu has commended Absa Bank Zambia PLC for increasing its sponsorship of the Absa Cup to K7 million for the 2026 edition, describing the move as a strong vote of confidence in Zambian football.
Speaking during the official launch and draw of the 19th edition of the tournament at Absa House in Lusaka, Mr Nkandu said the Absa Cup has, for nearly two decades, provided an important platform for talent development, community unity and national pride.
He praised Absa for its continued partnership with local football, noting that the enhanced sponsorship package, which includes improved prize money for champions, runners-up and outstanding individual performers, reinforces a culture of excellence in the sport.
The Minister also welcomed the introduction of travel grants for teams covering long distances to participate in matches, saying the initiative reflects a shared commitment to ensuring inclusive football development across all provinces.
Mr Nkandu further commended the Football Association of Zambia and the Zambia Premier League for their collaboration in sustaining the competition’s expanded format, which allows teams from across the country to compete on a national stage and nurture future football stars.
The 2026 tournament will run under the theme “In the Stands We Stand as One,” a message the Minister said reflects football’s unique ability to unite people across social and regional divides.
He also applauded corporate partners Spectra Oil and Big Tree Beverages for their continued support of the Absa Cup and other sporting initiatives, including last year’s Absa Marathon.
Mr Nkandu encouraged more private sector players to invest in sports development, noting that such partnerships are critical to youth empowerment and national unity.
