Air Traffic Controllers at Heart of Zambia’s Safe Skies Strategy

The Civil Aviation Authority of Zambia (CAAZ) has reiterated its dedication to strengthening oversight of air navigation services, professional development, and safety standards within the nation’s airspace.

Speaking on behalf of Director General Captain Derrick Luembe at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Guild of Air Traffic Controllers of Zambia (GATCOZ) in Lusaka, Acting Director of Air Navigation Safety Standards, Mr William James Mfune, emphasised that air traffic controllers are central to ensuring safe skies as traffic volumes and technological demands continue to grow.

“Air traffic controllers are the backbone of aviation safety, and every clearance issued contributes directly to the safety, regularity and efficiency of our airspace,” Mr Mfune said. “Collaboration between the Authority, the ATS Provider, and the Guild is essential to maintaining Zambia’s reputation as a safe and reliable airspace in the AFI Region.”

He highlighted key priorities for CAAZ, including strengthening infrastructure, enhancing competency-based training, managing fatigue risks, and promoting a just reporting culture to further improve operational safety.

Representing the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Associations (IFATCA), Southern Region Vice President Mr Allan Manema, commended Zambia’s active role in regional and continental aviation initiatives, noting the country’s strong representation in task forces and working groups across Africa and the Middle East.

The Zambia Air Force, represented by Deputy Director Air Traffic Services Col. Mwiya Masheke, reaffirmed its commitment to sustained collaboration with air traffic professionals and stakeholders, recognising the vital role controllers play in ensuring the orderly and expeditious flow of traffic in Zambian airspace.

Speaking on behalf of the Managing Director of Zambia Airports Corporation Limited (ZACL), Manager Air Traffic Services Mr Amos DX Bwali outlined strategic efforts to attract, retain, and value air traffic controllers. Initiatives include ongoing recruitment drives, psychosocial support programmes, and the procurement of an air traffic control simulator to enhance recurrent training and operational readiness.

In his address, GATCOZ President Mr Oscar Ng’andu reflected on the Guild’s achievements, highlighting strengthened stakeholder engagement, expanded professional development initiatives, and unity among members.

He called for continued mentorship of young controllers and unwavering dedication to operational safety standards.

The AGM, held under the theme “Air Traffic Controllers: Attract Them, Value Them and Keep Them”, brought together key aviation stakeholders to reinforce collaboration, professional development, and the safeguarding of Zambia’s airspace.
