Speaker Mutti Highlights Unity and Resilience as Pillars of Zambia’s Development

Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia, Dr Nelly B. K. Mutti, S.C., M.P., FAPRA, has emphasised the importance of unity, resilience, and collective national responsibility in advancing Zambia’s development agenda.

Speaking at a working luncheon hosted in her honour by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Zambia to the United Nations on 13 February, Speaker Mutti highlighted Parliament’s growing role in international engagement.

She stressed that active parliamentary participation in UN processes, including treaty ratifications and global policy dialogue, is crucial for informed legislative oversight at the national level.

“The United Nations remains an essential platform for fostering peace, development, and human rights,” Speaker Mutti noted, while also highlighting Zambia’s progress in stabilising the economy, enhancing agricultural production despite drought challenges, and expanding investments in alternative energy, particularly solar power, to address electricity shortages and support sustainable growth.

She praised the Mission for its unwavering support and warm hospitality extended to parliamentary delegations during official visits to New York.

Welcoming the delegation, Zambia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Dr Chola Milambo, reiterated the Mission’s commitment to advancing Zambia’s development priorities, strengthening international partnerships, and supporting the country’s broader national vision through active UN engagement.

Professor Chaloka Beyani, Special Advisor to the UN Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide, also addressed the gathering, highlighting the importance of Zambia’s strategic positioning in the evolving global landscape.

Speaker Mutti led the Zambian delegation to the 2026 Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Hearing, held from 12–13 February, under the theme: “Parliaments and the United Nations: Better together, delivering for the people.” The Hearing focused on promoting durable peace, sustainable development, and democratic governance through effective multilateral cooperation.
