Dr Chibamba Says FSC to Mobilise US$400 Million for Sustainable Forests in Africa

The Permanent Secretary in Zambia’s Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, Dr. Douty Chibamba, has underscored the pivotal role of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) in promoting responsible forest management while unlocking tangible benefits for local communities.

Dr Chibamba disclosed that the FSC is seeking to mobilise approximately US$400 million across Africa over a 10-year period to support countries that demonstrate strong commitment to sustainable forest management. The funding is expected to strengthen certification, conservation, and community-led forestry initiatives.

He made the remarks during a courtesy call on the Zambia High Commission in Nairobi, where he was received by Zambia’s High Commissioner to Kenya, Alfred Musemuna.

Dr Chibamba is in Kenya to attend an FSC meeting bringing together member countries to deliberate on sustainable forestry initiatives and financing mechanisms.

The Permanent Secretary explained that FSC certification ensures forests are managed responsibly by curbing illegal and excessive logging, safeguarding the environment, and fostering community participation.

He noted that sustainably managed forests deliver critical ecosystem services, including food production, climate regulation, and the mitigation of floods and droughts—services that are increasingly vital amid the impacts of climate change.

Dr Chibamba further highlighted that certified forests can attract companies willing to pay for ecosystem services, creating financial incentives for local communities while reinforcing conservation efforts.

During the meeting, participating countries presented their forest resources, achievements, and challenges in advancing sustainable forest management. Dr Chibamba said Zambia used the platform to showcase progress in forest governance and to position itself to benefit from future funding opportunities under the FSC initiative.

He reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to sustainable forest management and enhanced international cooperation as part of advancing the country’s green economy agenda.
