United Nations Commends Zambia for Strong Leadership in Protecting Children’s Rights
The United Nations has praised Zambia for its strong leadership, effective partnerships and sustained commitment to advancing and protecting the rights of children.
The commendation was made by the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Violence against Children, Dr Najat Malla, during a meeting with Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, Ms Angela Kawandami, on the margins of the 64th Session of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD64) in New York.
Dr Malla congratulated the Zambian Government for its continued leadership in the fight against violence against children, describing the country’s integrated and multi-sectoral approach as a model worthy of emulation.
She noted that Zambia’s efforts demonstrate strong political will and a clear commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment for children.
Discussions focused on Zambia’s progress in addressing all forms of violence against children, with particular emphasis on strengthened social protection systems and women’s economic empowerment initiatives.
Among the key achievements highlighted were reductions in child marriage through the implementation of a national strategy, as well as the positive impact of school feeding programmes, which have improved school attendance, reduced drop-out rates and enhanced literacy levels.
Dr Malla also applauded Zambia for adopting the Child Online Protection Strategy to safeguard children in digital spaces, and for investing in the social service workforce in line with the Social Service Workforce Investment Case.
Zambia continues to record steady progress in promoting and protecting children’s rights, reaffirming its commitment to securing a safer, more inclusive and prosperous future in which every child can thrive and reach their full potential.
