Zambia Reaffirms Commitment to Strengthening Partnership with the United Nations
Zambia has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation with the United Nations, emphasising efforts to transform global commitments into practical national action. The pledge was made during UN Day commemorations held in Lusaka under the theme, “UN@80: Celebrating Achievements, Shaping Tomorrow.”
Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, was represented at the event by Permanent Secretary for International Relations and Cooperation, Ms Etambuyu Anamela Gundersen, who delivered a speech on his behalf.
The Minister noted that Zambia will continue working closely with the UN in domesticating and operationalising key international frameworks, including the Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact, the Sevilla Outcome Document on Financing for Development, the Doha Programme of Action, and the Awaza Programme of Action.
He further stated that the theme of this year’s celebrations reflects Zambia’s longstanding journey with the UN, as well as the country’s future aspirations for an inclusive and sustainable partnership.
As part of the 80th anniversary activities, Ms Gundersen participated in a Public Dialogue titled “Building Partnerships for a Resilient, Inclusive, and Sustainable Future.” She praised the UN-Government Partnership Framework for aligning UN operations with Zambia’s development priorities and urged the UN country office to leverage its convening power to enhance coordination among UN agencies, government institutions, and cooperating partners.
The dialogue brought together senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of UN agencies, academia, and students to reflect on the UN’s achievements and six decades of partnership with Zambia.
UN Resident Coordinator in Zambia, Ms Beatrice Mutali, said UN Day not only celebrates progress in peace, human rights, and global development, but also presents an opportunity to jointly shape a better future.
She emphasised that the theme underscores the value of cooperation and the need for global solutions to global challenges.
Ms Mutali highlighted the UN’s support to Zambia since independence in 1964, contributing to sectors such as health, education, water and sanitation, nutrition, governance, agriculture, peacebuilding, and human rights.
She called on all stakeholders to reaffirm shared values, celebrate achievements, and commit to delivering better outcomes together.
