Zambia Signs MoU with Sochitel UK Ltd to Boost Digital Connectivity and Trade

The Ministry of Technology and Science of Zambia has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sochitel UK Ltd, marking a major milestone in the country’s digital transformation journey. The signing ceremony was presided over by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Eng. Dr Brilliant Habeenzu, at the Ministry Boardroom.

Dr Habeenzu described the partnership as a step towards building a digitally connected, secure, and efficient cross-border corridor between Zambia and neighbouring countries. “This collaboration represents a strategic milestone in Zambia’s digital transformation, enabling seamless trade and mobility powered by interoperable digital infrastructure and smart border systems,” he said.

The partnership aligns with President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision for a Smart Zambia, as outlined in the 8th National Development Plan and the National Digital Transformation Agenda, positioning Zambia as a regional digital hub.

Key innovations under the MoU include:

  • E-visas and zero roaming charges across participating countries;
  • Real-time cargo tracking and cross-border data exchange systems;
  • Enhanced digital trade and border efficiency, particularly along the Lobito Corridor.

These initiatives are expected to reduce border delays, lower business costs, and expand opportunities for small traders, logistics operators, and digital entrepreneurs, while fostering regional integration and competitiveness.

Dr Habeenzu urged all stakeholders – including government agencies, regulators, the private sector, and academia – to collaborate in implementing the MoU, ensuring it serves as a living framework for innovation, connectivity, and inclusive growth.

He also thanked Sochitel UK Ltd for their commitment to Africa’s digital future, highlighting their confidence in Zambia’s governance, infrastructure, and human capital.

“This partnership is more than an agreement; it is a foundation for Africa’s digital and economic future,” Dr Habeenzu concluded, calling on the private sector to invest and strengthen cross-border trade under the ‘No Stop Border’ initiative.
