ABSA Marathon Cleared of Doping as Tests Return Negative Results

All athletes who participated in this year’s ABSA Marathon in Lusaka have tested negative for banned substances, according to preliminary results released by the Anti-Doping team in Zambia.

The marathon, held on 6 September 2025, drew participants from various countries and marked the first time anti-doping tests were conducted at the event. Samples collected during the marathon were analysed at an internationally accredited laboratory in Doha, in line with global anti-doping standards and regulations.

In a statement issued by Dickson Jere, Zambia’s Member Country Representative at the Regional Anti-Doping Organisation (RADO), the results confirmed full compliance with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines.

“We congratulate the ABSA Marathon organisers and the Lusaka Fitness Squad for adhering to the required standards and guidelines set for anti-doping during the event,” Mr Jere said.

He further noted that similar random tests will be carried out at future sports events across Zambia to ensure continued compliance with international anti-doping rules.

The National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ), which currently serves as the interim National Anti-Doping Organisation (NADO), commended the athletes and officials for their cooperation during the exercise.

Mr Jere also urged sports federations to familiarise themselves with WADA’s new list of prohibited substances, which will take effect on 1 January 2026.

He warned that any athlete found using banned drugs or methods could face suspension or a complete ban from sporting competitions.

WADA, co-founded by 140 nations and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), is based in Canada and oversees the enforcement of the World Anti-Doping Code, which is supported by UNESCO.

In Zambia, the NOCZ remains the de facto anti-doping body until legislation is enacted to establish a permanent authority.
