Hichilema Commends Toka Chiefdom for Embracing National Unity and Development

President Hakainde Hichilema has praised the theme of a traditional ceremony held in Southern Province, describing it as a powerful reflection of national aspirations. The ceremony, held under the theme “Peace, Unity and Restoration,” was commended as an embodiment of the resilience and enduring spirit of the Chiefdom.

Delivering the President’s remarks, Southern Province Minister Hon. Credo Nanjuwa said the chosen theme resonates with Zambia’s commitment to fostering harmony and national cohesion. He applauded the organizers for anchoring the event on values that promote unity across cultural and political divides.

President Hichilema, in his message, reflected on the historical origins of the Toka-speaking people, a subgroup of the Tonga ethnic group. He explained that the name “Toka” was derived from a mispronunciation by the Makololo in the 16th century. The President traced the royal lineage to the first Musokotwane, Sianaluma, whose son Mwelwa played a foundational role in shaping the Kingdom.

The Head of State acknowledged several concerns raised by the Chiefdom, including the persistence of early child marriages and teenage pregnancies. He further highlighted the importance of delimiting Kazungula District—one of the largest in the country—and expediting the construction of chiefs’ palaces to improve traditional leadership infrastructure.

Reaffirming his government’s commitment, President Hichilema cited the recent commissioning of Chief Monze’s new palace, complete with electricity and running water, as evidence that development promises are being fulfilled.

Minister of Tourism, Hon. Rodney Sikumba, also addressed the gathering and disclosed that his ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, is working to ensure that each Chiefdom has a designated cultural arena for dignified and inclusive celebrations of traditional heritage.

A representative speaking on behalf of Chief Musokotwane expressed concern over the historical underdevelopment of the Chiefdom and urged the community to embrace progress. The Chief also condemned the rising cases of early child marriages and called for collective efforts to safeguard the future of the youth.

Meanwhile, Katombola Member of Parliament, Hon. Clement Andeleki Katombola, expressed deep gratitude to President Hichilema for his consistent support and engagement with the constituency, noting that the President had visited Katombola 11 times in the previous year alone.
