ZEMA Approves $627M Worth of Projects to Drive Zambia’s Sustainable Development
The Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) has greenlit 115 developmental projects worth a staggering $627 million in investment costs, following the 33rd Environmental Assessment Committee (EAC) meeting held in June 2025.
The projects, approved by the ZEMA Board of Directors, span critical sectors such as mining (51 projects), mineral processing (22), infrastructure development (18), manufacturing and processing (17), and agriculture, forestry, and tourism (7). These developments reflect Zambia’s continued push for inclusive, environmentally responsible economic growth.
Among the major projects endorsed is the construction of a ZAMMSA Regional Medical Warehouse in Kabwe, aimed at boosting medicine storage capacity and streamlining the supply chain for enhanced healthcare delivery in Central Province.
Another flagship approval is the K739 million upgrade of Mansa Airport infrastructure, a move expected to significantly improve air transport services in Luapula Province, facilitating greater regional connectivity and economic activity.
ZEMA reiterated its commitment to sustainable development through effective environmental regulation.
“ZEMA remains steadfast in delivering its mandate to promote sustainable development, ensuring prudent environmental management and protection,” said Mrs. Ruth Kanyanga Kamwi, Manager – Corporate Affairs, citing the Environmental Management Act No. 12 of 2011.
The agency emphasized that all approved projects will be subject to continuous environmental compliance monitoring to ensure they meet Zambia’s environmental and sustainability standards.
