Muchima Hails Critical Care Nurses, Pledges Policy Support for Specialized Growth

Health Minister Dr. Elijah Muchima has praised Zambia’s critical care nurses, describing them as the “backbone” of emergency and trauma services, and pledged a review of national health staffing policies to support their continued growth.

Speaking during the official opening of the 3rd Critical Care and Emergency and Trauma Nurses Conference at Njele Country Park in Ndola, Dr. Muchima acknowledged the indispensable role played by critical care nurses throughout patient care—from emergency response to rehabilitation.

“You are often the first responders during crises. Your skill, compassion, and resilience are what save lives,” he said.

Themed “Critical Care Without Walls: From Emergency Department to Rehabilitation,” the conference drew participants from Zambia and the region, reflecting the growing recognition of critical care nursing as a vital specialty in healthcare systems.

Dr. Muchima committed the Ministry of Health to re-evaluating its staff establishment to accommodate the increasing number of highly trained nurses in the critical care field.

“We need more of you. Our health system must evolve with your expertise,” he stated, while also encouraging nurses to continue upskilling in line with national health reforms under President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership.

He also lauded the profession’s frontline response during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting nurses’ courage amid adversity. “You stood tall when the nation needed you most,” he said.

Dr. Muchima further commended the Critical Care Nurses Association of Zambia (CCNAZ), Birmingham City University, and the Directorate of Nursing Services for organizing the event and expanding specialist nursing education.

He emphasized the importance of empowering nurse-led innovation, integrating rehabilitation services, and supporting the well-being of healthcare professionals.

The weeklong conference includes scientific discussions, policy dialogue, and professional networking, reinforcing Zambia’s push toward quality, inclusive, and resilient healthcare delivery.
