Pesapal and Cellulant Partner to Digitise Zambia’s Fuel Stations

Pan-African payments companies Pesapal and Cellulant have announced a strategic partnership to automate the country’s fuel retail sector, enabling over 600 fuel stations to transition from paper-based processes to real-time, tech-driven operations.

The two firms are rolling out a Forecourt Management Solution (FMS), which integrates Pesapal’s automation technology with Cellulant’s Tingg payments platform. The innovation allows fuel stations to automate pump-level data, track inventory in real-time, streamline reconciliations, and embed payments into every transaction, addressing the sector’s long-standing challenges of inefficiency and fraud.

According to the 2024 Energy Regulatory Board report, Zambia’s fuel retail sector processes millions of litres of fuel monthly, yet many outlets still rely on manual pump logs and paper receipts. Losses due to operational inefficiencies and fraud are estimated at more than 5% of pump volumes monthly.

“Fuel retail automation is no longer a luxury — it’s a necessity,” said Kevin Khaemba, Chief Commercial Officer at Pesapal. “We’re delivering a solution that brings accountability, efficiency, and innovation to the heart of Zambia’s fuel economy.”

Nsamwa Banda, General Manager at Cellulant Zambia, added that the new system will help operators gain real-time visibility, curb losses, and operate smarter. “It’s about helping businesses run leaner while delivering a seamless fueling experience to every motorist at the pump,” she said.

Fuel stations already using Tingg, Cellulant’s payment platform, can integrate instantly with Pesapal’s FMS to digitise sales, prevent fraud, and manage stock levels — including both wet and dry goods — more effectively.

“Each sale is closed with a payment method in real-time,” said Dorothy Tarimo, Pesapal’s Head of Business Solutions. “This ensures full transparency, faster shift closures, and accurate tax compliance.”

Richard Gesimba, Acting Chief Revenue Officer at Cellulant, said the partnership is about more than just technology. “We’re helping connect businesses to their ambitions and fuelling Zambia’s growth story,” he said.
