AfDB Wins Top Award for Africa’s Largest Wind Energy Project at Suez
The African Development Bank (AfDB) has won the “Infrastructure Deal of the Year” at the 2025 African Banker Awards for its $140 million financing role in Egypt’s landmark 1.1 GW Suez Wind Power Project—Africa’s largest wind energy initiative to date.
Developed by Suez Wind Energy S.A.E., the $1.04 billion wind farm will power over one million homes and cut 1.71 million tons of CO₂ emissions annually when operational in 2027.
The project integrates advanced 8MW turbines—being used in Africa for the first time—and brings together major investors including ACWA Power, HAU Energy B.V., Oman Investment Authority, and the Sovereign Fund of Egypt.
“This is a powerful example of what strong partnerships can achieve,” said Egypt’s Minister Dr. Rania Al-Mashat. “It reflects Egypt’s leadership under the NWFE energy program and our global climate commitments.”
AfDB Director Wale Shonibare emphasized the project’s significance in Africa’s renewable energy transition: “The Suez Wind project showcases Africa’s ability to execute complex green infrastructure with rigorous financial and environmental planning.”
Beyond funding, AfDB guided the project through macroeconomic risks, turbine integration, and conservation measures for migratory birds, setting a new benchmark for clean energy development.
