177 Wildlife Police Officers Commissioned in Largest Graduation in 20 Years

The Ministry of Tourism has commissioned 177 new Wildlife Police Officers (WPOs) in a historic pass out parade held at Chunga Wildlife Training School, the largest graduation in two decades.

The event was officiated by Tourism Minister Rodney Sikumba on behalf of President Hakainde Hichilema. The intake, comprising 122 men and 55 women, reflects the government’s commitment to gender inclusion in conservation.

“These officers will strengthen Zambia’s efforts under global frameworks like the 30×30 biodiversity goal. They are expected to serve with discipline, professionalism, and integrity,” said Sikumba.

The new WPOs will be deployed across all 20 national parks, 36 game management areas, and wildlife sanctuaries to combat poaching, human-wildlife conflict, and illegal land use.

Zambia’s protected areas cover over 231,000 square kilometers and generate more than K300 million in tourism revenue annually.

Department of National Parks and Wildlife Director Dominic Chiinda said the intake narrows the staffing gap, with the department previously operating at just 50% capacity.

Training Officer Lameck Phiri said the graduates underwent year-long intensive training covering physical, tactical, and ecological monitoring skills.

The Ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to inter-agency cooperation, community engagement, and continued investment in wildlife protection.
