SADC Condemns M23 Attacks on Peacekeeping Mission in Eastern DRC

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has strongly condemned the recent attack on the Southern African Development Community Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC) by the M23 armed group. The attacks, which occurred on January 22, 2025, have been described as a blatant violation of regional peace efforts.

In a statement issued by the SADC Secretariat, the organization emphasized that such aggression undermines the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and peace of the DRC and the entire SADC region. The attack in Goma prompted a swift response from SAMIDRC forces, who successfully repelled the armed group.

“The pursuit of territorial expansion by M23 only worsens the already dire humanitarian and security situation in Eastern DRC,” SADC noted, highlighting that thousands have lost their lives, and millions—especially vulnerable groups such as women, children, and the elderly—have been displaced.

SADC commended the bravery and dedication of the SAMIDRC personnel who defended the region, sacrificing their lives to restore peace. The organization also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the DRC in its pursuit of sustainable peace, security, and development.

The regional body called on M23 to adhere to the ceasefire agreement brokered through the Luanda Process led by Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço. SADC urged all parties involved to respect their obligations under the peace agreements and engage in dialogue to achieve lasting stability in the region.

Furthermore, SADC called upon the international community, including the United Nations, to denounce M23’s unlawful actions and to support efforts to end hostilities. The regional bloc expressed solidarity with the people of the DRC and extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the attack.

“We wish those injured a speedy recovery and extend our heartfelt condolences to the affected countries and families of the deceased,” the statement concluded.
