Scientists and Researchers Urged to Provide Practical Solutions for Energy and Drought Challenges
Zambia’s Ministry of Technology and Science has called on scientists and researchers to devise practical solutions to address the nation’s persistent energy and drought issues. Acting Minister Elias Mubanga, speaking at the 2024 Zambia Science and Technology Conference in Lusaka, emphasized the importance of science, technology, and innovation in addressing these critical challenges.
Highlighting the need for non-hydro dependent energy solutions, Mubanga challenged attendees to develop innovative technologies that can mitigate energy deficits caused by climate change. He questioned Zambia’s progress in technology and science over the past six decades, stressing the need for practical, sustainable steps.
“We want to see innovations, practical steps undertaken,” Mubanga said, noting that Zambia’s reliance on hydroelectric power has led to energy shortages impacting agriculture and citizens’ well-being.
He underscored the conference theme, which calls for collaboration toward sustainable solutions, and urged researchers to build on existing knowledge for continuity and economic growth.
Technology and Science Permanent Secretary Dr. Brilliant Habeenzu echoed these sentiments, stating that the energy shortages and droughts impact all aspects of society, restricting progress and highlighting the urgent need for resilience. He called for open dialogue to foster knowledge exchange and practical solutions.
World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) representative, Counselor Mohamad D. Islam, praised the conference theme, affirming WIPO’s support for Zambia’s innovators. He mentioned the IP4 project, which empowers young Zambian innovators by facilitating prototype development and intellectual property ownership.
Professor Sody Munsaka, chairperson of the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), emphasized the role of innovation and partnerships. He highlighted NSTC’s collaboration with PACRA and WIPO to support young innovators, demonstrating the potential of youth-driven technologies to positively impact society and the economy.
The conference showcased various technologies with the potential to address Zambia’s unique energy and drought challenges, offering practical solutions for a sustainable future.
