Zambia Army Condemns Violent Incident Involving Recruits in Mufulira
The Zambia Army has expressed deep concern over a violent altercation in Mufulira involving Army recruits from Taung Up Barracks. The incident occurred on October 5, 2024, when three recruits were reportedly attacked by a group of taxi drivers in Mufulira’s Central Business District, resulting in one recruit sustaining injuries. The injured recruit has since been admitted to Ronald Ross Hospital for treatment.
According to the Army, in response to their injured comrade, two of the recruits called for reinforcement from fellow trainees, leading to a series of violent actions against civilians. This escalated into property damage and injuries among Mufulira residents.
In a statement issued today, Zambia Army spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Sydney Mwewa strongly condemned the actions of the recruits, emphasizing that such behavior is contrary to the Army’s mission of serving and protecting Zambians.
The Army has launched a full investigation into the incident and assured the public that those responsible will face disciplinary measures as outlined in the Defence Act, Chapter 106 of the Laws of Zambia.
The Army extended an apology to the affected individuals and communities and urged the public to maintain peace and avoid provoking Army personnel, especially recruits who are still learning the responsibilities of soldiering.
“We are committed to preserving peace and harmony in Zambia and safeguarding the trust between the Army and the public,” stated Lt. Col. Mwewa, adding that the Zambia Army remains dedicated to defending the country’s sovereignty and contributing to global peace efforts.
The Army called for cooperation between civilians and soldiers, reminding the nation that the Zambia Army exists to serve and protect the people.
