China to Address Zambia’s Power Crisis at FOCAC Summit
China is taking strategic measures to tackle Zambia’s hydropower generation deficit exacerbated by recent droughts.
During the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit, scheduled for September 4-6, 2024, China will host the Zambia Power Development Forum in Beijing.
This forum aims to explore solutions to Zambia’s power shortages and support stable power generation.
Chinese Ambassador to Zambia, Han Jing, highlighted China’s commitment to assisting Zambia through this initiative.
Ambassador Han emphasized that President Hakainde Hichilema will participate in both the FOCAC Summit and the Zambia Power Development Forum.
He expressed confidence that these meetings will lead to innovative solutions benefiting Zambia.
China has previously invested in significant power infrastructure across Africa, including the construction and upgrade of 66,000 kilometers of power transmission and distribution lines.
The upcoming forum will further explore alternative energy sources to address Zambia’s current energy deficit of over 1,000 Megawatts, impacted by low water levels at Lake Kariba due to drought.
In addition to energy support, China will provide emergency food aid and assist with local borehole drilling programs in Zambia.
The longstanding partnership between China and Zambia, founded on 60 years of cooperation, will continue to support Zambia’s development and infrastructure needs.
