CAAC Urges President Hichilema to Appoint New ACC Leadership to Restore Public Confidence
Community Action Against Corruption (CAAC) has called on President Hakainde Hichilema to expedite the appointment of a new Director General and Board for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The organization believes that these appointments are crucial to rebuilding public confidence in Zambia’s ongoing fight against corruption.
In a statement released today, CAAC CEO Brightone Tembo expressed concerns over the recent developments surrounding the nation’s anti-corruption efforts, noting that public trust has significantly diminished.
Mr. Tembo warned that any further delays in appointing new leadership at the ACC could harm the fight against corruption and create the perception that the President is not fully committed to addressing the issue.
“It is public knowledge that the President’s decision to dissolve the ACC Board and accept the resignation of its Director General, Tom Shamakamba, indicates a crisis in the fight against corruption in Zambia,” said Mr. Tembo. “A swift response in appointing new office holders will help inject fresh energy and restore confidence in this critical endeavor.”
Mr. Tembo also emphasized the importance of appointing individuals who are not politically aligned and who possess a genuine commitment to combating corruption.
He urged President Hichilema to prioritize quality over expedience in filling the vacancies, stressing that the new appointees must be dedicated to serving the Zambian people without bias.
“The President should appoint individuals who understand the detrimental effects of corruption on national development and who are driven by the desire to achieve meaningful results,” Mr. Tembo added. “We need leaders who are fully committed to the fight against corruption, not those who are only half-hearted in their efforts.”
