Namibia Names Airport Road After Former President Hage Geingob
Namibia honored its late former President Hage Geingob by naming the Hosea Kutako International Airport Road as the Dr. Hage G. Geingob Freeway.
The renaming ceremony saw attendance from Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba, former President Hifikepunye Pohamba, numerous government officials, Chinese Ambassador to Namibia Zhao Weiping, representatives of Chinese enterprises, and over 300 local attendees.
President Mbumba highlighted Namibia’s commitment to infrastructure development, citing the significant role of world-class road networks, railways, airports, and ports in fostering economic growth, job creation, and regional integration.
Quoting Confucius, Mbumba described Geingob’s life as a purposeful journey, symbolized by the newly named freeway.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Works and Transport, John Mutorwa, expressed gratitude towards China for its support, emphasizing the highway’s role as a landmark project of unity and cooperation between Namibia and China.
The China Railway Seventh Group is responsible for constructing the first phase of the 45-km freeway, which is divided into three phases. The first and second phases began in 2016 and 2020, respectively, with Namibian government funding. The third phase started in 2022 with Chinese aid.
Ma Linlin, General Manager of the China Railway Seventh Group, assured that the construction maintained high standards, overcoming various challenges and showcasing the responsibility of Chinese enterprises.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2024, reducing travel time from the international airport to Windhoek’s center from 45 minutes to 25 minutes.
