Maamba Collieries Ltd Rebrands to Maamba Energy Ltd, Plans to Double Power Generation Capacity
Maamba Collieries Ltd, Zambia’s leading independent private power producer, has announced a strategic rebranding to Maamba Energy Ltd, reflecting its core focus on energy production.
The rebranding coincides with the company’s ambitious plan to double its electricity generation capacity from the current 300MW to 600MW, a move aimed at addressing Zambia’s critical power deficit.
“Energy is our primary business, and the new name of Maamba Energy better reflects that,” said Chief Executive Officer Lt Col Cyrus Minwalla (Retd). “Coal sales have been merely an adjunct to our core power business. As the new name suggests, the company aspires to be a significant player in the energy space in the region as a long-term strategy.”
Maamba Energy, jointly owned by Nava Bharat Singapore Pte Ltd (65%) and ZCCM-IH (35%), is expanding its current 300 MW power plant in Maamba, Sinazongwe, by adding an additional 300 MW units.
This expansion will significantly enhance Zambia’s energy security, diversify the electricity supply mix, and bolster the country’s much-needed baseload generation capacity.
Currently, Maamba Energy’s generation capacity accounts for almost 14 percent of Zambia’s installed capacity, making it the nation’s largest independent power producer.
The increased capacity will be pivotal in mitigating the nation’s power shortages and supporting sustainable economic growth.
