MISA Zambia Mourns the Passing of Dr. Sam Phiri

MISA Zambia is deeply saddened by the unexpected demise of former Information Permanent Secretary, Dr. Sam Phiri.

Dr. Phiri, a stalwart in the media and communication field, passed away on Saturday, May 25th, 2024, in Lusaka, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and unwavering dedication.

Dr. Phiri’s illustrious career saw him serve as the Head of the Department of Media and Communication Studies at the University of Zambia (UNZA), where he played a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of journalists. 

Prior to his academic tenure, he distinguished himself as a veteran journalist at the Times of Zambia, before venturing into international spheres.

His contributions extended beyond borders, as he played a key role at a southern African funding partner, supporting MISA Zambia and various media entities in the country. 

Dr. Phiri’s commitment to nurturing young talents and promoting media professionalism through training workshops, in collaboration with organizations like the Open Society for Southern Africa (OSISA), is commendable.

Renowned for his ability to articulate complex issues with clarity and precision, Dr. Phiri commanded respect from diverse audiences nationwide. His humble leadership style and unwavering dedication to his craft left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of interacting with him.

Lorraine Mwanza-Chisanga, Chairperson of MISA Zambia, expressed heartfelt condolences to Dr. Phiri’s family, the University of Zambia, and the entire media fraternity during this trying time. 

“MISA Zambia stands in solidarity with Dr. Phiri’s loved ones and colleagues as we mourn his loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as we navigate through this difficult period together,” stated Mwanza-Chisanga.

Dr. Sam Phiri’s legacy will continue to inspire generations of journalists and media professionals, serving as a beacon of excellence and integrity in the field of communication. 

His contributions to the media landscape in Zambia and beyond will be fondly remembered and cherished.
