ZCA Launches Major Road Transformation Project at Levy Mwanawasa Medical University
The Zambia Chinese Association (ZCA) has embarked on the rehabilitation of the China-Zambia Friendship Road in a landmark initiative aimed at bolstering infrastructure and strengthening the bonds between Zambia and China.
This crucial 1.1-kilometer stretch links the residence of the Chinese medical team to Levy Mwanawasa Medical University (LMMU).
The project, greenlit by the Lusaka City Council (LCC), will introduce a host of modern features, including solar lights, a garden park, sitting benches, and extensive tree planting along the route.
The groundbreaking ceremony marked the commencement of the works, with ZCA President Zhang Jian emphasizing the road’s significance for the Chinese medical team, which offers assistance at Levy Mwanawasa Hospital.
“On behalf of the Zambia Chinese Association, I pledge to collaborate with dedicated enterprises to ensure the successful completion of the China-Zambia Friendship Avenue renovation project,” stated Zhang Jian.
He highlighted that the transformation would elevate the road’s status and surrounding area, promising an avenue enriched with greenery and flowers, enhanced street lighting, and an overall improved aesthetic appeal.
This initiative underscores the strong China-Zambia friendship and provides a tangible benefit to the local community. As part of the project, the ZCA will donate 2,500 trees annually to the LCC for the next 20 years, culminating in 50,000 trees valued at $200,000, to further beautify Lusaka.
Prof. Elwyn Chomba, Vice Chancellor of LMMU, expressed that the upgraded road would significantly improve accessibility for students, patients, and staff, enhancing their daily commute to classes, work, and medical services.
Lusaka Mayor Chilando Chitangala also praised the development, noting that the addition of trees and modern features would greatly enhance the environment, especially in the fight against climate change.
“The donation of trees and the integration of modern features will not only beautify the area but also contribute to our efforts in combating the adverse effects of climate change,” stated Mayor Chitangala.
Once completed, the China-Zambia Friendship Road project is expected to markedly improve the infrastructure of Levy Mwanawasa Medical University and its surrounding areas, symbolizing a fusion of cultural cooperation and sustainable development.
