CANEX Creations Backs Nigerian Film Clarissa, Secures Global Distribution with NEON

CANEX Creations Inc. (CCInc), the African intellectual property investment arm backed by Afreximbank’s Fund for Export Development in Africa (FEDA), has announced its investment in the Nigerian-produced drama Clarissa.

The feature film, directed by twin filmmakers Arie and Chuko Esiri, has been acquired for global distribution by NEON, with theatrical releases planned in the United States and international markets.

A contemporary reimagining of Virginia Woolf’s novel set in Lagos, Clarissa follows a society woman as she hosts a party, confronting memories of past relationships, hidden desires, and lost aspirations over a single night.

Shot on 35mm across Lagos and Delta State, the film features a distinguished cast including Sophie Okonedo, David Oyelowo, Ayo Edebiri, India Amarteifio, Toheeb Jimoh, and Nikki Amuka-Bird.

Arie and Chuko Esiri, whose debut feature Eyimofe premiered at Berlinale and received critical acclaim, co-produced the film alongside Theresa Park and Nicholas Weinstock, with executive producers including Sophie Okonedo and Dolly Omodolapo Kola-Balogun.

Osahon Akpata, CEO of CANEX Creations, said: “Clarissa exemplifies the globally resonant, IP-driven storytelling that CCInc supports. Its acquisition by NEON validates the filmmakers’ creative ambition and the potential of Africa-backed financing for internationally competitive film content.”

Chuko Esiri added: “From the outset, it was important that Clarissa be rooted and resourced on the continent. African institutions backing a film of this scale reflects growing confidence that our stories can be produced locally while standing alongside the great films of modern cinema.”

The production was entirely financed by Africa-based institutions, led by CCInc and MBO Capital, highlighting the continent’s growing capacity to support major film projects.

Clarissa marks a continued commitment by CCInc to invest in high-quality African intellectual property with clear pathways to international markets, spanning film, television, music, fashion, and other IP-intensive sectors.

NEON, renowned for award-winning films such as Parasite and Anora, will manage the global release, while NEON International oversees foreign sales.
