FIFA Appoints Lyson Zulu as Africa High-Performance Specialist

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has announced that its Technical Director, Mr Lyson Zulu, has been appointed by FIFA as the Technical Development Scheme (TDS) High-Performance Specialist for Africa.

Mr Zulu, who joined FAZ in March 2019 as Football Development Manager before being appointed Technical Director in April 2019, will take up the international role following years of service to Zambian football.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management from Loughborough University in the United Kingdom and a Sports Performance degree from the University of Bath. In 2024, Mr Zulu was among 24 Technical Directors worldwide to receive the FIFA Technical Leadership Diploma in Zurich after completing an 18-month academic programme.

FAZ General Secretary Machacha Shepande described the appointment as a source of pride for the Association, despite the loss of Mr Zulu’s technical expertise.

“While Mr Zulu’s departure will deprive FAZ of his valuable experience, his appointment to an international platform is a moment of pride for the institution,” Shepande said.

“Congratulations, Mr Zulu. Your journey is an inspiration, and your impact will continue to be felt far beyond our borders. We wish you every success in the next chapter of your career.”

Shepande added that the appointment was a strong endorsement of the quality of technical professionals being developed within FAZ.

“Mr Zulu’s appointment highlights FAZ’s growing reputation as a contributor of high-level technical expertise to global football. This achievement is not only a personal milestone for Mr Zulu, but also a victory for FAZ, Zambian football and African football as a whole,” he said.

He noted that Mr Zulu’s new role presents an opportunity to influence high-performance football systems across the continent, contributing to the competitiveness, structure and global relevance of African football.
