Major 100MW Solar Project Launched to Boost Zambia’s Energy Security
Zambia’s drive toward long-term energy security has received a major boost following the groundbreaking of the Kafue Gorge Lower 100MW Solar Project in Sikoongo Chiefdom, Chirundu District, Southern Province.
The project includes a 100MW solar power plant, a 33/330kV substation, and a 15-kilometre transmission line linking the facility to the Kafue Gorge Upper grid. Construction is expected to be completed within 12 months.
Speaking at the ceremony on Thursday, Eng. Justin Loongo, Managing Director of ZESCO, said the project will deliver clean and stable electricity, support rural communities, create employment, and attract new investment.
He explained that three possible transmission routes were assessed before selecting the most efficient and least disruptive path. “The preferred route from Mwiinga Village through Kapiri Hills is the shortest, most cost-effective option. It avoids private land, causes no displacement, stays clear of protected areas, and maintains a safe distance from the Kafue River.”
Eng. Loongo reaffirmed ZESCO’s commitment to building a resilient and modern energy system aligned with the Government’s reform agenda under President Hakainde Hichilema, aimed at positioning Zambia as one of the region’s most competitive energy markets.
Energy Minister Makozo Chikote said the solar project represents a significant step towards sustainable energy security. “This is a project that will change livelihoods. The progress we are making in the energy sector has been made possible through the New Dawn Government’s bold reforms.”
Project Manager Philip Pretorious added that the solar facility will enhance Zambia’s energy profile by complementing existing hydropower stations. “This is a hybrid project designed to support the hydropower dam. Jigsco Energy Corporation Limited, with ZESCO, will champion corporate social investments to uplift community livelihoods through skills development and job creation.”
The Kafue Gorge Lower 100MW Solar Project is a joint venture between ZESCO and Jigsco Energy Corporation Limited, marking another milestone in Zambia’s transition toward a diversified and climate-resilient energy mix.
