Zambia Strengthens Schools’ Role in Wildlife and Conservation Education

The Ministry of Tourism, through the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW), has joined forces with the Ministry of Education to revitalise Environmental Education Clubs (EECs) in schools nationwide.

The initiative reflects government’s commitment to cultivating environmental stewardship, civic responsibility, and sustainable development among young learners. By strengthening the role of EECs, pupils will gain practical life skills while deepening their knowledge and appreciation of Zambia’s rich natural heritage.

A key focus of the clubs will be raising awareness about Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC). Pupils will learn about its causes and impacts, while being encouraged to adopt community-based solutions that support both conservation and human safety.

The partnership is being coordinated through the Directorate of Teacher Education and Specialised Services (TESS), in collaboration with the Directorates of Primary and Secondary Education. Together with DNPW, the directorates will guide the development of club guidelines, teacher training, and monitoring frameworks to ensure effective delivery across the country.

Ministry of Tourism Permanent Secretary, Evans Muhanga, stressed the importance of the initiative, noting its role in shaping environmentally conscious future leaders.

“By empowering our learners with knowledge and practical skills through Environmental Education Clubs, we are not only safeguarding Zambia’s biodiversity but also tackling issues such as Human-Wildlife Conflict. This will help nurture responsible citizens who value both conservation and community well-being,” he said.
