Zambia Reaffirms Commitment to Regional Peace as it Hands Over SADC Organ Troika Role
Zambia has reaffirmed its dedication to peace, security, and democracy in Southern Africa as it concluded its tenure in the SADC Organ Troika on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation.
Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, S.C., M.P., Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, represented President Hakainde Hichilema at the SADC Organ Troika Summit, chaired by Tanzania’s Vice President, Dr Philip Isdor Mpango, on behalf of President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
In his address, Hon. Haimbe said Zambia’s handover of responsibility marked a reaffirmation of the region’s collective commitment to stability and integration. He highlighted Zambia’s contributions since joining the Troika in August 2022, including conflict prevention, mediation, and consolidation of democracy.
The Minister pointed to Zambia’s active engagement in peace processes in Lesotho, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Mozambique.
He expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in eastern DRC, reaffirming Zambia’s support for the SADC Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC), and commended Member States that contributed troops and resources.
On democracy, Hon. Haimbe underscored Zambia’s leadership in spearheading SADC Electoral Observation Missions, ensuring transparency and credibility in regional elections.
He also noted the rise of new security threats, such as cybercrime, terrorism, and transnational crime, and called for stronger intelligence sharing and border security cooperation.
Expressing gratitude for the trust placed in Zambia, Hon. Haimbe assured full support for the incoming leadership of the Organ Troika, urging Member States to remain united and vigilant in safeguarding Southern Africa’s peace and prosperity.
