Tourism Minister Commissions Food Science Lab, Launches MICE Programmes at ZITHS
Zambia’s tourism sector took a significant leap forward today as the Minister of Tourism, Honourable Rodney Sikumba, officially commissioned a new Food Science Laboratory and launched the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) programmes at the Zambia Institute for Tourism and Hospitality Studies (ZITHS), Fairview Campus.
Speaking during the ceremony, Honourable Sikumba said the dual milestone signals government’s commitment to skills development and infrastructure investment in tourism and hospitality.
“The commissioning of this laboratory and launch of the MICE programme demonstrate Government’s resolve to invest in tourism infrastructure and learning tools that respond directly to labour market needs,” he said.
He reaffirmed tourism’s role in Zambia’s economic diversification strategy, highlighting its potential for job creation, entrepreneurship and GDP contribution. The Minister also encouraged young people to seize the opportunities offered by the MICE sub-sector, calling it a “catalyst for growth” within the industry.
ZITHS Governing Council Chairperson, Ms. Mulemwa Moongwa, praised the collaboration between the institute and Government, noting the newly commissioned laboratory would enhance the quality of training in food production and hospitality sciences, critical areas previously identified as skills gaps.
“This is a testament to our shared vision for an empowered, skilled tourism workforce,” said Ms. Moongwa. She emphasized ZITHS’ ambition to become a regional hub for hospitality training, bolstered by strategic partnerships and enhanced infrastructure.
The Food Science Laboratory is set to benefit not only ZITHS students but also other institutions, aligning with the Government’s inclusive education and public service delivery approach.
The Ministry of Tourism has called on private sector players to collaborate with ZITHS to promote job creation, improve service standards, and support sustainable tourism development.
