South Africa Sends Special Envoy to Zambia Following Passing of Former President Lungu
South Africa has extended its deepest condolences to the Government and people of Zambia following the death of former President Edgar Lungu, with Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr. Ronald Lamola, concluding a High-Level Diplomatic Mission to Lusaka on Sunday.
Acting as President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Special Envoy, Minister Lamola was received by His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema. He delivered a heartfelt message of solidarity on behalf of the South African Government and citizens, expressing sorrow over the loss of a respected statesman and regional figure.
“President Ramaphosa sends his profound condolences to Zambia in this time of national mourning,” Minister Lamola said, emphasizing the historic bonds of friendship between the two Southern African nations.
Minister Lamola reiterated South Africa’s support for Zambia’s plans to grant former President Lungu a state funeral, calling it a “fitting tribute” to his legacy and contributions to the country.
He also acknowledged the importance of honoring the wishes of the late President’s family, noting the legal and moral balance that must be maintained in this sensitive moment.
“We approach this with dignity and mutual respect, in recognition of President Lungu’s enduring legacy and our nations’ shared history,” the Minister stated.
The visit further highlighted South Africa’s commitment to regional unity and support during periods of transition and loss. Minister Lamola concluded his mission by offering prayers and sympathies to all those affected and reaffirming the deep ties between Pretoria and Lusaka.
