Kenyan All-Girl Team Wins Silver in Global Huawei Cloud Competition

Kenya is celebrating a remarkable achievement after an all-female student team secured second place in the Cloud category at the prestigious Global Huawei ICT Competition held in Shenzhen, China.

The outstanding trio — Ifrah Hussein and Beverly Ndombi from Moi University, and Banzy from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) — made history with their performance in this year’s finals, held from May 20 to May 24.

Their success at the 9th edition of the competition reflects Kenya’s growing prominence in the global tech education landscape. Accompanied by Fikirini Katoi Kahindi, Principal Secretary of the State Department for Youth and Creative Economy, the students showcased advanced cloud computing skills, honed through hands-on labs and real-world simulations guided by Huawei-certified instructors.

“This win underscores the potential of Kenya’s youth and reaffirms our commitment to nurturing digital skills and empowering young innovators,” said PS Kahindi during the awards ceremony.

Themed “Connection, Glory and Future”, the 2024–2025 edition drew over 210,000 participants from more than 2,000 institutions across 100+ countries. The competition featured four tracks: Network, Cloud, Computing, and Innovation — offering a platform for students to demonstrate technical excellence and creativity.

Kenya was represented by 12 students across four teams, further solidifying the country’s standing as a key player in global tech talent development.
