Choosing the Right Tool: Chain Saw vs. Pole Saw for the Job

When it comes to trimming trees, two tools dominate the scene: the chainsaw and the pole saw. But which one should you choose? Experts say the answer depends on what kind of work you’re planning to tackle.

Brad Barthorpe, Sales Manager – Distributors Africa for Husqvarna South Africa, shared some valuable insight into the “battle of the saws,” emphasizing that both are powerful tools, but their applications differ significantly.

“Chainsaws were once reserved for farmers and professional tree fellers, but today homeowners are using them for everything from chopping firewood to felling trees and building fences,” said Barthorpe. “The trick is selecting a saw that matches the kind of work you’ll be doing most often.”

Chainsaws are built for heavy-duty work like cutting large trees and thick logs at eye level. On the other hand, pole saws are designed for precision tasks like pruning higher branches and vegetation that are difficult to reach.

Both tools share several characteristics—they are handheld, use motor-powered rotating chains, and run on petrol, batteries, or electricity. However, the differences are what truly set them apart. Pole saws feature long handles and lighter weights for better overhead control, while chainsaws are heavier and have larger blades for handling thicker wood.

“Chainsaws are more versatile and powerful, but pole saws offer superior reach and are safer for trimming at height,” added Barthorpe. “Your decision should always be based on the type of cutting you plan to do most often.”

He also noted safety considerations: while chainsaws pose the risk of cutting injuries, the main danger with pole saws is falling branches. Price-wise, chainsaws are generally more budget-friendly than pole saws, depending on the make and model.

Barthorpe’s advice is simple—whether you’re a forester, farmer, or home gardener, assess your needs first, then invest in the right tool.

Husqvarna, a Swedish-born brand under the Husqvarna Group, has led the field in innovative tools for outdoor tasks since 1689.
