VillageReach Appoints Dr. Ahmed Ogwell as CEO to Lead 2030 Strategy

Global nonprofit VillageReach has appointed Dr. Ahmed Ogwell as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective May 2025. Dr. Ogwell, a seasoned leader in global health, brings nearly 30 years of experience in improving health outcomes across Africa.

His appointment marks a crucial step in advancing VillageReach’s mission to reduce health inequities and improve access to primary healthcare for under-reached communities by 2030.

Dr. Ogwell comes from the United Nations Foundation, where he served as Vice President of Global Health Strategy. He previously held significant roles at the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the World Health Organization, and the Kenyan Ministry of Health. His leadership has shaped public health policy, particularly in areas like health emergencies, disease prevention, and health diplomacy.

In his new role at VillageReach, Dr. Ogwell will oversee the execution of the organization’s 2030 Strategy, focusing on responsive primary healthcare systems. The strategy aims to adapt to the changing demands of healthcare, ensuring services are available to vulnerable communities when they need them the most.

Dr. Ogwell’s vast expertise and strong relationships with governments and partners will be pivotal in delivering VillageReach’s goals.

Dr. Ogwell stated, “We are at a crucial moment where we must tackle the multifaceted challenges of global health, from infectious disease outbreaks to funding uncertainties. To do this, we must unite our efforts, innovate solutions, and strengthen health systems. I am honored to join VillageReach at this critical time to confront these issues and achieve our 2030 goals.”

Sena Kwawu, Chair of VillageReach’s Board, expressed confidence in Dr. Ogwell’s leadership, saying, “In these times of unprecedented change, Dr. Ogwell’s deep understanding of health systems in Africa and his vision for the 2030 Strategy will be crucial for navigating challenges and continuing our mission.”

Dr. Ogwell succeeds Emily Bancroft, who served as CEO since 2017, overseeing the organization’s growth and a significant expansion in healthcare access, from 20 million to 111 million people.

VillageReach’s work remains vital, particularly amid ongoing health sector setbacks. With Dr. Ogwell at the helm, the organization is poised to continue making a meaningful impact on global health, ensuring equitable access to healthcare services for all.
