Gov’t Enforces New Minimum Wages for Bus and Truck Drivers

The Ministry of Labour and Social Security has called on employers in the transport sector and related industries to comply with the newly adjusted minimum wages for bus and truck drivers, which officially take effect today.

The revised wage structure, announced through Statutory Instrument No. 3 of 2025, raises the basic minimum wage for truck drivers from K3,000 to K4,000 and for bus drivers from K2,200 to K3,000. The new regulations also include increased cross-border subsistence allowances—US$30 per night for drivers of vehicles without sleeping cabins and US$20 per night for those with sleeping cabins.

“These measures aim to promote an equitable work environment and enhance worker productivity, which contributes directly to national economic growth,” said Ms. Mwaka Ndawa, Principal Public Relations Officer at the Ministry, in a statement issued on Friday.

The adjustments apply exclusively to non-unionized public service vehicle (PSV) drivers. Employers have been urged to revise their pay structures accordingly and to communicate the changes to workers in a transparent manner.

The Ministry warned that it will be conducting joint inspections with statutory bodies to ensure full compliance. Employers found in violation of the wage regulations will face sanctions.

“We appeal to all employers to prioritize the well-being of their workers by adhering to the new wage requirements,” the Ministry emphasized.
