ZCSA Calls for Compliance Among Electrical Products Suppliers to Enhance Public Safety

The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has urged suppliers of electrical products to comply with compulsory standards to protect consumers from potential hazards such as electric shocks, fires, and property damage.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ engagement meeting with Lusaka-based suppliers of electrical products, ZCSA Executive Director Mr. Gerald Chizinga emphasized the agency’s commitment to ensuring product safety and consumer protection in line with the Compulsory Standards Act No. 3 of 2017.

“The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency is mandated to administer, maintain, and enforce compulsory standards for public safety, consumer, and environmental protection,” Mr. Chizinga stated. “We have noted with concern that electrical products such as adaptors, sockets, and extension cables are among the most non-compliant products on the market, posing serious safety risks.”

The agency currently enforces three key compulsory standards for electrical products, covering plugs, sockets, adaptors, household electrical appliances, and electric cables. Non-compliant products, according to ZCSA, can be seized, destroyed, or reworked, with offenders potentially facing prosecution.

Through market surveillance and inspections, the agency has already withdrawn unsafe products from the market. To further address the challenge, Mr. Chizinga highlighted a two-pronged approach combining public education and enhanced enforcement actions across the country.

“The responsibility of ensuring compliance is shared among various stakeholders, including suppliers and traders,” he added. “This meeting provides an opportunity for industry players to gain clarity on conformity assessment procedures and our expectations.”

In addition to inspections at major border entry points and local production facilities, ZCSA is considering introducing a product registration system to enhance compliance monitoring. The agency also reiterated its availability for guidance on electrical product compliance beyond the meeting.

Mr. Chizinga concluded by calling for stronger collaboration between ZCSA, suppliers, and consumers to prevent electrical accidents and promote a safer environment for all.

“Public safety is our priority, and we urge all suppliers and traders to work with us in ensuring that only safe and compliant products reach the market.”

The meeting, attended by suppliers, industry stakeholders, and members of the press, was part of ZCSA’s broader efforts to uphold product safety standards in Zambia.
