Pope Francis Urges Debt Relief for Poor Nations and Global Peace in 2025

Pope Francis has called on world leaders from wealthier nations to cancel or reduce the debts of less privileged countries, aligning with the spirit of the Vatican’s 2025 Jubilee Year.

Addressing thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square, the Pontiff emphasized the need for economic fairness and global solidarity.

“The Jubilee asks to translate this remission of debts on a social level so that no person, no family, no people is crushed by debts,” Pope Francis said. “I encourage the rulers of countries with a Christian tradition to set a good example by cancelling or reducing as much as possible the debts of the poorest countries.”

The Pope’s appeal comes at a time when many developing nations face crippling debt burdens, hindering efforts to combat poverty and address social challenges.

In addition to debt relief, Pope Francis urged prayers for an end to conflicts worldwide in 2025. He specifically mentioned ongoing struggles in Ukraine, Gaza, Israel, Myanmar, and the Kivu region of Africa.

“Let us pray for an end to the fighting on all fronts and a decisive move towards peace and reconciliation,” he said, urging global leaders and citizens to work towards unity and healing.

During the New Year’s Day Mass, the Pope reiterated the Catholic Church’s stance against abortion, a subject that recently sparked controversy. In September, during a visit to Belgium, Francis referred to the country’s abortion laws as “homicidal,” prompting backlash from Belgian officials.

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo described the remarks as “totally unacceptable,” even summoning the Vatican’s ambassador for clarification.

Despite the criticism, Pope Francis remains steadfast in advocating for life, peace, and social justice, central themes of his papacy.

The Vatican’s Jubilee Year celebrations in 2025 are expected to draw millions of pilgrims, offering a platform for the Pope’s calls for economic reform, conflict resolution, and spiritual renewal.
