Kabwe and Makwena Shine at Kansanshi Open Chess Tournament

The fifth annual Kansanshi Open Chess Tournament, hosted by First Quantum Minerals’ Kansanshi Mining PLC, concluded in a spectacle of skill and strategy at the Philip Pascal Chapel, Trident College. The tournament attracted around 200 chess enthusiasts from Zambia and neighboring nations.

Reigning champions Timothy Kabwe of Zambia and Christine Makwena of Zimbabwe retained their crowns in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively, showcasing masterful performances. Winners across other categories also emerged, reflecting the depth of talent on display.

Simon Keevil, Kansanshi Foundation Manager, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to sports development. “Chess fosters critical life skills and leadership. We’re proud to support this platform that nurtures future leaders,” he said.
