Zambian Foreign Minister Addresses 79th UN General Assembly, Calls for Global Reforms
Zambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, SC, MP, addressed the high-level General Debate of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly at UN Headquarters in New York on Saturday, September 28, 2024.
Under the theme “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity,” Minister Haimbe emphasized Zambia’s commitment to multilateralism as the key to solving global and regional challenges.
Hon. Haimbe highlighted Zambia’s leadership in peace and security through its chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation from August 2023 to August 2024.
He underscored Zambia’s contributions to stabilizing regions affected by conflict, including the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado Province.
Addressing economic and environmental concerns, Minister Haimbe called for the full realization of the Loss and Damage Fund to assist developing countries with climate-related disasters.
He also stressed the importance of reforming the G-20 debt restructuring framework to reduce delays and ensure certainty.
Zambia, in collaboration with Sweden, successfully negotiated the adoption of the Global Digital Compact. Minister Haimbe also noted the country’s strides in ending child marriage, with 32 of Africa’s 54 nations launching national campaigns.
Zambia joined other nations in calling for reforms to the UN Security Council and the global financial architecture to better meet the development needs of the 21st century, while urging stronger international tax cooperation to combat illicit financial flows.
Hon. Haimbe’s address reflected Zambia’s ongoing commitment to peace, sustainable development, and the empowerment of women and girls.
