Tanzanian Opposition Official Found Dead After Acid Attack
Ali Kibao, a prominent official of Tanzania’s opposition party CHADEMA, has been found dead following a violent acid attack. Kibao, who went missing last week, was discovered with signs of severe beatings and acid burns on his face.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who has recently relaxed restrictions on opposition activities, swiftly condemned the attack. In a statement on X, President Hassan expressed her administration’s firm stance against such violence and called for a thorough investigation.
Kibao was abducted on Friday from a bus traveling from Dar es Salaam to Tanga by armed men. His body was located the following day, as confirmed by opposition leader Freeman Mbowe. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, and Mbowe has urged the president to establish a commission to investigate the circumstances of Kibao’s death.
President Hassan has requested a comprehensive report from investigating agencies, acknowledging the gravity of the situation. However, opposition figures are calling for an independent investigation, citing concerns over potential conflicts of interest given that police are among the suspects.
Acid attacks are rare in Tanzania, where violence against opposition figures has historically involved physical assaults or shootings. Recent detentions and releases of opposition leaders during political rally preparations reflect the tense atmosphere in the run-up to next year’s presidential election.
