Zambia Launches 2024/2025 Rainfall Forecast to Aid Key Sectors

The Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Honourable Mike Elton Mposha, has unveiled Zambia’s 2024/2025 seasonal rainfall forecast. Speaking in Lusaka, he emphasized the forecast’s importance in aiding sectors such as agriculture, water, energy, and disaster risk management, all significantly impacted by rainfall patterns.

Minister Mposha highlighted the severe drought experienced during the 2023/2024 season, which led to a 50% drop in maize production, a food deficit affecting 6 million people, and energy shortages caused by reduced hydropower generation.

This forecast aims to mitigate similar challenges by enabling better planning and response strategies across the country.

The forecast predicts normal rainfall for most parts of Zambia, though areas prone to flooding and the northeastern region may experience episodic heavy rains and delayed onset, respectively.

The meteorological services’ role in issuing early warnings and forecasts will support drought mitigation, disaster response, and more efficient agricultural planning.

Minister Mposha encouraged Zambians to stay updated on weather patterns and work together to clear drainage systems in preparation for the rainy season.

He also urged the public to adopt sustainable practices such as tree planting and energy conservation, highlighting the importance of preparedness amidst unpredictable climate changes.

The Ministry will continue to provide updates through various channels, including community radio stations, social media, and TV, throughout the rainy season.
