Zambia and China Strengthen Ties with Bilateral Meeting in Beijing
Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing to further cement the long-standing friendship and cooperation between Zambia and China.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), a platform that President Hichilema praised for its potential to enhance bilateral cooperation across various sectors, especially as Zambia focuses on economic growth.
During the meeting, President Hichilema acknowledged the significant increase in economic activity between Zambia and China since the two nations elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership in September 2023.
He expressed gratitude for China’s continued support in key sectors of Zambia’s economy, including infrastructure, energy, and mining. As Zambia’s “Chief Marketing Officer,” President Hichilema emphasized his commitment to pursuing economic diplomacy that delivers tangible benefits to the Zambian people.
President Hichilema also commended China’s vital role in maintaining global peace and security, which allows countries to channel their resources toward advancing economic development.
In a notable event, President Hichilema, alongside Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China Railway Construction Limited (CRCC) for the revitalization of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA).
The revitalization of this strategic railway line is expected to significantly boost trade and business in the region. President Hichilema thanked the Chinese government for its commitment to reviving TAZARA, underscoring its importance in enhancing regional connectivity and economic integration.
