Huawei Donates 25 Communication Towers to Zambia to Boost Connectivity in Remote Areas
Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei has donated equipment for the construction of 25 communication towers in Zambia, a significant boost to the country’s efforts to improve connectivity in remote areas.
The donation includes advanced wireless and transmission technology power systems, materials, and related services, all aimed at enhancing access to communication services across the nation.
The commitment from Huawei was initially made during President Hakainde Hichilema’s visit to China in September 2023. This led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Huawei and Zambia’s Ministry of Technology and Science in June 2024.
Hon. Felix Mutati, Zambia’s Minister of Technology and Science, announced that the government has allocated the 25 communication towers to Zamtel, the state-owned telecommunications company.
He instructed Zamtel to prioritize the construction of these towers in remote regions where access to phone services is currently unavailable.
“All Zambians must have access to phone services to benefit from government services and improve their lives,” Minister Mutati emphasized during the announcement.
Zamtel’s Chief Executive Officer, Jason Mwanza, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to supporting the government’s efforts to promote financial inclusion.
He highlighted Zamtel’s partnership with the government in disbursing funds under the Social Cash Transfer and Farmer Input Support Programs, ensuring that people in even the most remote areas can access these essential services.
The announcement was made during the unveiling of the winner of the Zamtel Wina Bondi competition, Hamaiya Munsaka, who won a three-bedroom house in Lilayi Estates, Lusaka. The competition, which ran from 9th February to 9th August 2024, received over 14 million entries nationwide.
In addition to Mr. Munsaka’s grand prize, 433 consolation winners received various prizes, including cash, solar products, PlayStations, and geysers.
Mr. Munsaka, who hails from Kalomo, expressed his gratitude and announced that he has appointed himself as an ambassador for Zamtel, noting that the telecom firm has significantly improved his family’s life, marking their first visit to Lusaka.
