SADC Industrialisation Week 2024 Concludes with Strong Call for Regional Unity and Economic Growth

The 7th annual SADC Industrialisation Week (SIW) officially closed on 1 August 2024 at the Harare International Convention Centre, marking a successful end to a week-long event focused on advancing regional industrialisation. The event, which ran from 28 July to 2 August, saw over 2,300 delegates from across the SADC region and beyond.

In his closing remarks, Honourable Nqobizitha M. Ndhlovu, Minister of Industry and Commerce for Zimbabwe, emphasized the critical role of private sector-led industrialisation in driving employment and improving living standards across the SADC region. 

He called on Member States to increase intra-regional trade and expedite the ratification of the SADC Protocol on Industry.

Honourable Ndhlovu praised the speakers and panellists for their insightful contributions, highlighting that their discussions would help Member States move up the value chain by promoting value addition and resource beneficiation. 

He urged all stakeholders to maintain unity and commitment to the SADC Industrialisation Strategy and Roadmap (2015-2063).

Ms. Angele Makombo N’tumba, SADC Deputy Executive Secretary for Regional Integration, extended her gratitude to the private sector, particularly the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI), and international partners like UNIDO and UNECA. 

She stressed the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in achieving the goals of SIW and improving lives in the region.

The Deputy Executive Secretary assured that the “Harare Declaration” from the SIW would be presented to the next SADC Council of Ministers and the 44th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government for consideration.

The week began with a Media Awareness Day to highlight the importance of media in supporting industrialisation efforts. The Investment Conference, attended by more than 900 delegates, was officially opened by Vice President Honourable General (Rtd.) Dr. C.G.D.N Chiwenga. The event culminated with the official opening by President Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa.

A record 267 exhibitors showcased a diverse range of products from across SADC countries, underscoring the region’s growing industrial capabilities. The 7th SIW served as a vital platform for sharing experiences and advancing the industrialisation and economic transformation agenda for the SADC region.
